Matt Lowe: “Now You See Me: The Career Returns to Visibility for Elite Politicians” In many labour markets, visibility is considered a precursor to progression – employees have to “make their name known” to advance. On the other hand, visibility may backfire – particularly if visibility comes too soon, and if employers are non-Bayesian learners. I use a natural experiment in UK Parliament to estimate the short- and long-run effects of visibility on parliamentary careers. Each year, a lottery determines which politicians get the opportunity to draft legislation, increasing their visibility within the party. Winning has negative and persistent effects on holding government or opposition positions for inexperienced winners. In contrast, the returns to visibility are positive and persistent for experienced winners. Inconsistent with a Bayesian learning model with correct priors, these results show that visibility can actually backfire for those without experience.
