Applied Micro Workshop – Lasse Stötzer, “Self-Serving Attribution and Discrimination”

Lasse Stötzer and Sven Walter: “Self-Serving Attribution and Discrimination” We argue that people after receiving a negative response to a job application are exposed to an attribution problem. Specifically, they have to ask themselves whether their own skills or discrimination based on a group characteristic—like gender, ethnicity or age—played the major role in the firm’s decision. We want to show that people solve such an attribution problem in a self-serving manner. This means negative signals are disproportionally attributed to discrimination, which has negative consequences on peoples’ investment in human capital, advance training decisions and labor market participation. In contrast to most of the existing discrimination literature, we want to highlight the importance of workers perceptions when it comes to discrimination. In particular, we want to show that even in the case of little or no discrimination on the firm side peoples beliefs lead to great inequalities on the labor market. We propose a lab experiment and want to discuss further steps to implement our research idea.
