Laura Ehrmantraut, Pia Pinger, and Renske Stans: “The Expected (Signaling) Value of Higher Education” This paper presents first evidence on expected pecuniary and non-pecuniary returns to completing higher education. We make use of a survey conducted on a large and diverse sample of college students, which collects counterfactual information on expected labour market outcomes for different educational scenarios. These data allow us to estimate the expected lifetime return to completing higher education as well as the perceived internal rate of return. Moreover, we are able to substantiate the importance of these returns for decision-making by relating the expected returns to perceived dropout probabilities. In addition, the considerable size and diversity of our sample, enables us to detect important heterogeneities in expected returns with respect to, e.g., gender, field of study, or ability. Lastly, we study the perceived value of signalling in higher education, by investigating the expected returns to completing tertiary education among students who are very close to graduating.
