Applied Micro Workshop – Hua-Jing Han, “Memory and Belief Formation”

— filed under:

Lorenz Götte, Hua-Jing Han, and Benson Tsz Kin Leung: “Memory and Belief Formation” We study experimentally how individuals form beliefs in a dynamic setting where they navigate a sequence of signals in limited time. The experiment consists of a guessing task to access the belief formation process and a dual n-back task to record working memory abilities of the subjects. First, we hypothesize that the intertemporal trade-off drives confirmation bias, i.e., subjects are more sensitive to belief-confirming information than to belief-challenging information when they are exposed to a more cognitively demanding environment. Second, we analyze the role of working memory on belief formation.
