Christian Apenbrink, Timo Freyer, and Johannes Schmieden: “Misperceptions of Income and Wealth Inequality” Empirical evidence shows that perceived income and wealth inequalities do not coincide with measured inequalities. As perceived inequalities seem to be an important determinant for preferences for redistribution, we want to investigate the underlying belief formation process. We present the design of a survey experiment that tests the role of a cognitive bias (individuals compare themselves to the wrong reference group) and motivated beliefs for the observed misperceptions.
