ONLINE – Applied Micro Workshop – Laurenz Günther, “The (Economic-)Refugee Crisis: Explaining Disapproval of Immigration”
Laurenz Richard Kuno Günther: “The (Economic-)Refugee Crisis: Explaining Disapproval of Immigration” There is ample evidence that parts of the European population hold strong anti-immigration attitudes. In this paper I argue that that such attitudes are largely driven by disapproval of immigration by asylum seekers who are perceived to migrate for economic reasons. I match data from a large conjoint experiment, undertaken in 15 European countries, in which subjects accept or reject hypothetical asylum seekers, to data on the characteristics of real asylum seekers. This allows me to estimate acceptance rates for asylum seekers by reason for migrating. I find that in most European countries citizens are in favor of immigration by those who flee persecution. At the same time, majorities are opposed to letting in asylum seekers who migrate for economic reasons. In order to understand why citizens favor one group over the other I design an information intervention in which I provide a representative sample of Germans with information about the number of asylum seekers who are still in Germany and whose claims have been either accepted or rejected.
